The University of California San Francisco is working with the Facial Pain Research Foundation to identify patients with active trigeminal neuralgia (TN) pain to participate in a pilot clinical trial of noninvasive High Frequency repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (HF-rTMS). Low frequency TMS has shown no pain benefit in TN, but there is encouraging but inconclusive evidence concerning the benefit of HF-rTMS in TN, which is what this study will validate.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The study will include patients with typical purely paroxysmal TN, as well as patients with constant and paroxysmal TN pain. The study protocol calls for ten consecutive days of treatments and functional MRI scans. Patients that do not respond to the initial treatment will be offered the opportunity to retry the treatment at a different more promising brain location identified from their own fMRI scans.

THE STUDY IS CURRENTLY ENROLLING PATIENTS.

The study is only being conducted at the University of California San Fransisco campus and since the study will take 10+ consecutive days, patients need to live or be willing to travel to San Francisco to participate in the study. To learn more about the study, contact the study coordinator.
